Southcreek Donates Power Backup to Cancer Registry

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 21, 2010) − The Kentucky Cancer Registry (KCR) at the Markey Cancer Center will be able to continue operations even in the event of an electrical power failure, thanks to a generous gift from Southcreek Properties.

Southcreek Properties, which owns the Southcreek Park office complex in Lexington where KCR is located, donated a natural gas backup power generator and an emergency cooling system to assure that KCR’s computing center remains operational 24/7.  Markey researchers and hospitals around the state rely on KCR’s computers to manage cancer patient data.  In addition, Southcreek Properties covered all of the costs associated with the installation of the equipment. The total value of the gift was $60,605.

"We are very grateful for this gift from Southcreek Properties," said KCR Director Dr. Thomas C. Tucker. "This fail-safe system is critical to our operations in Kentucky and to clients across the U.S. and Canada.  Our computers provide public access to cancer incidence and mortality data for the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results registries from California to New Jersey and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries.

"This backup power system will ensure that crucial cancer data will remain secure and accessible even if the electrical power grid fails. With severe winter weather upon us, such an occurrence is a very real possibility. This system gives us confidence that we will be able to maintain continuity of operations even under extreme conditions."

The Kentucky Cancer Registry is the official population-based central cancer registry for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The registry collects complete, accurate, and timely cancer data from every health care facility in the Commonwealth that diagnoses or treats cancer patients. These data are used to initiate cancer control programs, evaluate intervention activities and conduct epidemiological research. For more information, please visit the KCR website at www.kcr.uky.edu.
