'Behind the Blue': Guest podcast ‘From the Blue: The UK Alumni Association Podcast’ — Alumnae on UK's Board of Trustees

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 25, 2023) — This week’s episode of "Behind the Blue" features an episode of "From the Blue: The UK Alumni Association Podcast." For more information about "From the Blue" or the Unviersity of Kentucky Alumni Association, click here.

As the UK Alumni Association recognizes the impact women have made upon the university over the past 135 years, it is essential to consider the influence of the Board of Trustees as it governs the institution’s educational and financial policies. The UK Board of Trustees consists of 16 members appointed by the governor, two members of the faculty, one university staff employee and one member of the student body. Trustees serve six-year terms.

Georgia M. Blazer was first woman appointed to serve on the Board of Trustees and served from 1939 to 1961. Mira Snider Ball was the first woman to serve as chair of the UK Board of Trustees in 2007. Today, the three representatives to the board are three accomplished female alumnae:

  • Brenda Baker Gosney ’70 College of Health Sciences, ’75 College of Education
  • Paula Leach Pope ’73 ’75 College of Education
  • Rachel Watts Webb ’05 College of Communication and Information

These women recently spent time with UK Alumni Association Associate Director for Strategic Initiatives Christina Yue to share how UK has impacted their personal and professional lives.

To discover what’s wildly possible at the University of Kentucky, click here.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
