Barnstable Brown Kentucky Diabetes and Obesity Center to Offer Comprehensive Same-Day Clinic
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 8, 2012) − Diabetes is a complicated disease that requires the expertise of multiple healthcare providers which can also mean multiple visits to a doctor's office for the patient. In an effort to increase convenience and decrease travel time for diabetic patients, the Barnstable Brown Kentucky Diabetes and Obesity Center at the University of Kentucky will offer a comprehensive same-day clinic for diabetes care beginning Aug. 15.
Patients will spend several hours at the clinic but both the patient and diabetes team will have a complete overview of the patient's health, diabetes, and a treatment plan with an end result of better management of the disease and overall health for the patient. An appointment at the comprehensive same-day clinic will include:
- Comprehensive laboratory testing
- Consult with the diabetes nurse educator
- Consult with the diabetes nutritionist
- Consult with a diabetes physician for evaluation and development of a patient-centered treatment plan
- Examination by an ophthalmologist for a diabetes eye exam if one has not been performed within the past year.
- Consult with cardiologist, if necessary
The Barnstable Brown Kentucky Diabetes and Obesity Center at UK is the only comprehensive diabetes care center in the state and takes a multi-disciplinary approach to provide exemplary care for persons with all types of diabetes. The Center’s physicians also staff the Inpatient Diabetes Program to provide seamless care for patients after hospitalization. Clinical initiatives of the Center include:
- Pre-operative and perioperative surgical diabetes evaluation and management.
- Management of diabetes in transplantation.
- Management of Cystic Fibrosis related diabetes.
