Daugherty Named Editor-in-Chief of Premier Academic Journal

LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 10, 2012) — Alan Daugherty, director of the University of Kentucky Saha Cardiovascular Research Center, senior associate dean for research in the UK College of Medicine and Gill Foundation Chair in Preventive Cardiology, has been named the new editor-in-chief of the premier academic journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology: Journal of the American Heart Association (ATVB), a monthly journal devoted to the biology, prevention and impact of vascular diseases.

The July 2012 issue of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology is the first issue produced by the new editorial team.

“We are excited to continue to assist in the ascent of a journal that has provided numerous scientific contributions to the areas of science included in its name," said Daugherty in an introductory editorial.

ATVB publishes essential peer-reviewed research on vascular biology, atherosclerosis and lipoproteins, and thrombosis. The focus is on new scientific advances that will drive tomorrow’s advances in clinical practice. Highlights of the current issue include a study of synaptic proteins involved in embryonic development of the vascular system, new findings on the role of B cells in atherosclerosis, and the latest genetic data on disease associations with lipoprotein. The current issue also presents an 'ATVB in Focus' review on the mechanisms of cell death in heart disease.

“Our primary focus is on attracting the most important new primary research studies across disciplines," said Daugherty. "We're also committed to presenting fair and balanced reviews of critical issues in the subject areas we cover."

In addition to peer-reviewed research, ATVB also presents editorials, letters to the editor and other features to keep readers involved in the worldwide dialogue concerning the development, prevention and treatment of arteriosclerosis and thrombosis.

“Dr. Daugherty brings outstanding scientific expertise and judgment, coupled with proven editorial skills, to this new assignment,” commented Martha K. Cathcart, chair of the AHA's Scientific Publishing Committee.  “We're confident that his team will continue and consolidate ATVB's role as the most-read and most-valued journal of vascular research.”
