Kirwan-Blanding Complex Wireless Upgrades Complete

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 23, 2013) — In July, Time Warner Cable replaced the wireless Internet infrastructure for the Kirwan-Blanding Complex area.

Built in 1967, the complex is home to more than 2,500 undergraduate UK students each semester. Residents use wireless Internet services on smart phones, computers and tablet devices. Before the upgrade, wireless access was slow and not consistently available throughout the complex.

The new technology supports download speeds of 40 megabits per second, 20 times faster than the previous technology. The wireless upgrade provides 100 percent coverage via 308 new wireless access points in all rooms and common areas of the Kirwan and Blanding complex buildings.

This upgrade will benefit 2,551 of 5,248 campus residents. Residence halls scheduled for reconstruction in the next 24 months were not included in this project.
