Published: Apr 21, 2010

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 21, 2010) – A memorial to University of Kentucky Trustee Russ Williams, who died last year, will be dedicated at 3 p.m. Friday, April 23, in the grassy area behind Scovell Hall, located between Washington Avenue and Huguelet Drive on UK's campus. The ceremony is open to the public.

UK's Phi Gamma Delta fraternity is sponsoring the dedication ceremony and the memorial, which consists of a crimson king maple tree and an accompanying plaque in Williams' honor and memory. Williams, who had served as a graduate adviser to Phi Gamma Delta, died April 8, 2009.

"Since Russ's passing one year ago, we have been hard at work making his memorial become a reality and planning this dedication ceremony," said Phi Gamma Delta Past President James Chapman. "We are very honored to be able to remember Russ in this manner, and we hope this ceremony and the memorial to him on campus will serve as a lasting testament to his memory and work. Russ was a loved member of the UK community, and he will continue to be missed and remembered."

Speakers at the ceremony include UK President Lee T. Todd Jr., Ed Gabe, the ritualist of Phi Gamma Delta, and Kimberly Wilson, associate vice president for Human Resources.

Williams served as UK's only staff trustee until his death in 2009   He was elected to the position in 1998 when it was created and won re-election three times. He was a senior training specialist in Human Resources Training and Development, located in Scovell Hall. Williams received his bachelor's and master's degrees in social work from the University of Kentucky and was an inductee of the UK Greek Hall of Fame.
