SAB's Second SpeakBlue Lecture Features Seattle Seahawks Cornerback Richard Sherman
LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 27, 2015) — Richard Sherman, Seattle Seahawks cornerback, will take the stage at the SpeakBlue Distinguished Speaker Series event presented by University of Kentucky Student Activities Board's Engaging Issues Committee at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, in the Singletary Center for the Arts.
Growing up in Compton, California, and being the first graduate of Dominquez High School to receive a scholarship from Stanford University in 20 years, Sherman knows what it is like to face and overcome setbacks. Sherman played wide receiver and cornerback during his time at Stanford and used his last year of eligibility to begin a master’s degree.
Since being drafted by the Seahawks in 2011, Sherman has more interceptions and defended passes than any other player in the NFL. Despite his incredible successes on the field, attempts have been made to stereotype him as a “thug.” Sherman continuously counters these accusations and has established himself as one of the most thoughtful and intelligent players in the league.
“Richard Sherman will be an incredible installment in our series because of his experience in overcoming hardships and challenging stereotypes,” James Collard, director of Engaging Issues, said. “His perspective as an individual who has chosen to define himself rather than be confined to the expectations of others makes him a great speaker at a time when dangerous stereotypes remain present on college campuses.”
The event will include a moderated conversation with Sherman, as well as a Q&A session. Tickets are free for UK students, faculty and staff with a valid UK ID and are now available; tickets are $10 for general public and are available today. Tickets are available for pick-up or purchase at the Singletary Center Ticket Office. Doors to the event will open at 7:15 p.m. and the event will begin at 8 p.m. April 8.
