UK VIP Center Urges Public to Take Stalking Seriously

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 24, 2012) — Think stalking is no big deal? Think again.

Learn more at a discussion titled “Stalking: Bringing It Into Focus” at the University of Kentucky Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) Center with national expert TK Logan, a professor in the Department of Behavioral Science, UK College of Medicine, and other local specialists. The event is scheduled at 4:30–6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, at the VIP Center in the lower level of Frazee Hall. The event is free and open to anyone, students, faculty and staff.

Stalking is often joked about, minimized or misunderstood. Sometimes, behaviors such as texting someone dozens of times a day, showing up at someone’s home or workplace, or repeatedly seeing someone everywhere, can seem normal and can be overlooked. However, it is not acceptable when the behavior is or develops into a pattern of threatening, harassing or intimidating acts that cause someone to fear for their safety. This is stalking. Stalking is not a joke, it’s not romantic, and it’s not okay.
