WUKY, 91.3 FM To Broadcast Special Sept. 11 Coverage

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 8, 2011) — In commemoration and retrospect, WUKY will air all-day programming on Sept. 11, 2011, to remember one of the worst tragedies in American history. WUKY will offer coverage all day and into the night to honor this life changing event in the country's history. 

“To mark 10 years since the attacks on the World Trade Center and The Pentagon on September 11, NPR will air coverage leading up to Sept. 11 and on the day itself. The overarching theme of coverage is: How has America changed? NPR will air rigorous reporting on everything from national security to politics to our culture, and also reflecting on the human toll — the impact of Sept. 11 on people's lives and our country.”-NPR

WUKY will air two very special programs beginning at 6 p.m. Sept. 11.   The first program will be “We Remember: StoryCorps Stories from 9/11” followed by “The Sonic Memorial Project.”

“We Remember: StoryCorps Stories from 9/11”  is hosted by NPR's Audie Cornish, in partnership with StoryCorps and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, "We Remember" takes an intimate look at lives forever changed by the attacks on 9/11. These are stories from families and friends who tell us about their loved ones and their loss: the father who recalls the last words he shared with his son, the recovery worker who discovers a new meaning for normal, the fireman's daughter who knew that her dad who perished in the line of duty wouldn't have wanted it any other way. On the 10th anniversary of the attacks, host Audie Cornish checks in with StoryCorps families to find out how they make their way today.

“The Sonic Memorial Project” commemorates the life and history of the World Trade Center and the people who passed through its doors. A collaboration between The Kitchen Sisters Davia Nelson and Nikki Silva, NPR, independent producers, and stations and listeners nationwide, the project was created with audio artifacts, rare recordings, and the input of thousands of people who called in with their personal stories.

New York writer Paul Auster hosts this re-mixed and remastered special, featuring stories that focus on little-known aspects of the life and history of the World Trade Center and surrounding neighborhood, such as:

• "Radio Row: The Neighborhood Before The WTC," the district of electronic shops displaced by the building of the WTC
• "The Building Stewardesses: Construction Guides at The WTC, and Other Little Known Tales of The Creation of The Towers, 1968-1971": stories of the politics and public opinion surrounding the towers told by the man who masterminded the construction of the buildings and by the young college co-ed construction guides he hired to educate the public and put a friendly face on the project.
