Over 800 UK Students in Programs Abroad

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 17, 2013) ― More than 800 University of Kentucky students have left the U.S. during the 2012-2013 academic year to pursue UK Education Abroad opportunities throughout the world.

As UK Education Abroad Director Anthony Ogden describes, Education Abroad opportunities have taken on a new meaning, one that reflects a more academic vision. “It’s not about where you want to go,” Ogden said. “It’s about what you want to do. Education Abroad now includes study abroad, research abroad and intern abroad. As educators, we are here to help students find the right academic fit.”

From independent research projects in Turkey, to service projects in Ecuador, to internships in China, Education Abroad carries a variety of programs just as diverse as the student population on campus. Through the selection process, EA helps students view these programs as an investment that can significantly advance one’s academic and professional aspirations.

These students will receive more than just stamps in their passports. In fact, students who enroll in Education Abroad programs are exploring their disciplines and interests in ways that they couldn’t do on campus or even in the U.S.

Through UK-sponsored summer programs, many faculty members are also exploring international topics in their fields along with UK students, including Dr. Beth Barnes, director of the School of Journalism and Telecommunications and an integrated strategic communications professor leading a summer program in Cape Town, South Africa. Barnes believes the program will equip students with an international perspective that will change how they view the U.S.

“It's a part of the world they might not see otherwise, and learning about the past and ongoing racial and socioeconomic tensions in South Africa can help students view the U.S. in a different light,” she said.

Education Abroad programming is a cornerstone of UK’s mission as the state’s flagship university to promote a “diversity of community and ideas” throughout the state.  As President Eli Capilouto has stated, “A philosophy of openness and inclusivity free from ignorance assures that we educate and prepare students to work and live in a global society.” Education Abroad programs fuel this philosophy by equipping students with an international perspective and experiences that will last a lifetime.
