Senior Emily Sharp Wins Traditions T Design Contest

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 19, 2013) — Emily Sharp, an integrated strategic communication major in the University of Kentucky College of Communication and Information, has been named winner of the 2013-14 Traditions T design contest. For her winning design, Sharp received a $500 cash prize and five Traditions T-shirts.

“I found out about the Traditions T during my freshman year, and I always thought it would be cool to enter the contest, but every year I decided my designs weren’t ‘good enough.’ Finally my senior year came around, and it was now or never, so to speak,” said Sharp, who lives in Lexington. “Thanks to a little encouragement from family and friends, I submitted a shirt. I’m so grateful for those kind words; they gave me the extra push I needed!”

The front of the winning design features the words “I am part of it” overlaid on a map of Kentucky. The back reads, “I am part of a tradition of excellence. More than fans... We’re a family. A community. We are leaders. We are scholars. We have character and class. We know southern hospitality. We are the Big Blue Nation. And I am part of it.”

She says she wanted the shirt to reflect what the University of Kentucky has meant to her. “This place has been so much more than a school for me. For the last four years, UK has served as my home-away-from-home. I’ve met my second family in my friends,” she said. “The opportunities that have been afforded to me here are more than I could have ever hoped for. Being a Wildcat unites you with people all over the state, nation and world. The Big Blue Nation is a community unlike any other, and like this Traditions T says, I’m sincerely so thankful that I am part of it.”

The Traditions T is sponsored by the UK Alumni Association and was established in 2007 to unite the UK student body in celebrating what it means to be a Wildcat. Artwork is student-designed, and UK students vote each spring semester to determine the winning design. All UK students, alumni and the general public will be able to purchase this year’s Traditions T at the UK Bookstore or the UK Team Shop, including at UK home football games during this academic year.
