DiPaola appointed to Liaison Committee on Medical Education
LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 31, 2019) — University of Kentucky College of Medicine Dean Robert S. DiPaola has been selected as a professional member on the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) beginning the 2019-2020 academic year.
“To be nominated and selected by a group of peers is an incredible honor,” said DiPaola. “More importantly, it is an honor to be part of a large team of faculty, staff and students at the UK College of Medicine making this a possibility. “
Across the United States and Canada, the LCME selects 19 voting members – 15 professional members, two public members, and two medical students – to serve three-year terms. DiPaola was nominated and highly recommended by his peers for the position.
“Last October, our team completed one of the longest site visits in LCME history and was successfully reaccredited,” he said. “During that time, and through the survey visits I have led, I’ve been able to work with the LCME in several roles. This is a great opportunity, not only for me professionally, but it speaks volumes of the caliber of instruction, training and the institution here at UK.”
The LCME is the U.S. Department of Education-recognized accrediting body for programs leading to the M.D. degree in the United States. It also accredits M.D. programs in Canada, in cooperation with the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS). The LCME is jointly sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Medical Association (AMA).
DiPaola has led the UK College of Medicine as dean since April 2016. He previously served as the director of the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Vice Chancellor for Cancer Programs, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences. He has extensive experience in translational research, clinical operations, education and leadership.
He earned a bachelor's of science degree and his medical degree at the University of Utah; completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center; and completed a Fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia.
