Hone Your Art Skills This Fall at UK Fine Arts Institute

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 22, 2017) — The University of Kentucky's Fine Arts Institute will offer a variety of classes this fall that explore different aspects of art and creativity. The classes are all offered as noncredit art courses and are perfect for adults with busy work schedules. This fall's 18 courses and workshops range anywhere from ceramics and metalworking to jewelry-making and woodworking. The institute takes the beginner to more advanced student in a variety of mediums.

Four times a year, UK Fine Arts Institute offers weekly classes as well as some weekend workshops in the visual arts to suit various types of schedules. Most classes meet once a week during the evening for anywhere between three to 10 weeks. This fall's classes and workshops will be held in the UK Art and Visual Studies Building; the UK Metal Arts Building; and Dancin’ Dogs Designs Studio, located at 228 Lisle Industrial Ave. in Lexington.

Registration is now open for the fall session and includes the following classes:

Bookmaking

  • “The Art of Bookmaking for Beginners” with Renee Oschwald, 6-9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Oct. 5.

Ceramics

  • "Beginning Ceramics" with Jill Coldiron, 6-9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Sept. 21, and
  • "Taking Ceramics to the Next Level" with Coldiron, 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 19.

Digital Image Editing

  • "Photoshop for Beginners" with Lennon Michalski, 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 12, and
  • "Lightroom for Beginners" with Rich Greissman, 6-9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Oct. 19.

Drawing

  • "Explorations in Drawing" with Christine Kuhn, 6-9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Oct. 5.

Fiber

  • "Introduction to 3-D Feltmaking" with Jan Durham, 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning Oct. 11.

Jewelry-Making

  • “Jewelry-Making for Beginners" with Dwayne Cobb, 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 12.

Metalworking

  • "Metalworking" with Jeremy Colbert, 6-9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Sept 14.

Mixed Media

  • "Layering it On: Mixed Media Painting Techniques" with Kuhn, 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning Oct. 4.

Painting

  • "Learn to Paint, Yes You Can!" with Kuhn, 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Oct. 3; and
  • "Contemporary Painting Techniques" with Michalski, 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning Oct. 18.

Woodworking (limited availability)

  • "Woodworking for Beginners" with Lynn Sweet, 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 5; and
  • "Woodworking for Veterans" with Sweet, 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 5.

Individuals interested in classes in the first session may register up until the week of classes if space is still available.

Additionally, the institute will offer open drawing sessions with Brandon Smith and Anthony Roccanova. These sessions take place 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursdays and 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays throughout the fall.

The following workshops during the fall session offer more abbreviated class experiences in a workshop format:

Digital Image Editing

  • "Intermediate Adobe Lightroom Workshop" with Greissman, 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Oct. 8.

Fiber

  • "Handmade Fabric" (beginners workshop) with Laverne Zabielski, 1-3 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 16 and  Oct. 14; and
  • "Handmade Fabric" (advanced workshop) with Zabielski, 1-3 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 23 and Nov. 4.

Photography

  • "One Day Digital Photography Workshop for Beginners" with Michalski, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16 or Oct. 21.
