Make Your Summer More Colorful Sharpening Your Art Skills

LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 27, 2017) — The University of Kentucky's Fine Arts Institute will offer a second round of classes and workshops this summer that explore different aspects of art and creativity. The classes are all offered as noncredit art courses and are perfect for adults with busy work schedules. Courses range anywhere from ceramics and Photoshop to jewelry-making and sculpture, a new class offered by the institute. The institute takes beginner to more advanced students in a variety of mediums.

Four times a year, UK Fine Arts Institute offers weekly classes as well as some weekend workshops in the visual arts to suit various types of class, work and vacation schedules. Most classes meet once a week during the evening. Summer Session 2’s classes and workshops will be held in the UK Art and Visual Studies Building; Dancin’ Dogs Designs Studio, located at 228 Lisle Industrial Ave.; and Sts. Peter and Paul Regional Catholic School, located at 423 West Short.

Summer Session 1 is wrapping up and registration is now being taken for Summer Session 2, which will run from July 10- Aug. 18 and includes 11 weekly classes and four workshops.

Summer Session 2 includes the following classes:

Ceramics

"Beginning Ceramics" with Jill Coldiron, 6-9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning July 13, and
"Taking Ceramics to the Next Level" with Coldiron, 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning July 11.

Drawing

"Explorations in Drawing" with Christine Kuhn, 6-9 p.m. Mondays, beginning July 10;
“Foundational Portrait Drawing” with Thomas Baker, 6-9 p.m. Mondays, beginning July 10; and
"Figure Drawing for Advanced Students" with Baker, 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning July 11.

Jewelry Making

“Jewelry-Making for Beginners" with Dwayne Cobb, 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning July 11.

Mixed Media

"Layering it On: Mixed Media Painting Techniques" with Kuhn, 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning July 12.

Painting

"Learn to Paint, Yes You Can!" with Kuhn, 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning July 11. and
“Contemporary Painting” with Lennon Michalski, 6-9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning July 20.

Photoshop

“Photoshop for beginners” with Michalski, 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning July 19.

Sculpture

“Portrait Sculpture" with Baker, 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning July 10.

Individuals interested in classes in the second session may register up until the week of classes, except for the new sculpture class. Registration deadline for this class is July 3 to allow for the ordering of materials.

Additionally, the institute will offer open drawing sessions with Brandon Smith and Anthony Roccanova. These sessions take place 6-8 p.m. Thursdays and 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays throughout the summer.

The following workshops during Summer Session 2 offer more abbreviated class experiences in a workshop format:

Drawing

“Pet Portraiture Workshop for Beginners” with Baker, 1-5 p.m. Saturday, July 22.

Handmade Fabrics

"Handmade Fabrics Workshop" with Laverne Zabielski, 1-3 p.m. Saturdays, Beginning Workshop July 15 or Aug. 5 and Advanced Workshop July 29 or Aug. 19.

Photography

“One Day Digital Photography Workshop for Beginners” with Michalski, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, July 22, and
“Two Day Photography Workshop: Residential Architectural Photography” with Rich Greissman, 6:30-9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 8, and 2-4 p.m. Sunday, July 9.

For those unable to commit to two days for the “Two Day Photography Workshop,” they may join the Saturday outing only.
