of

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 16, 2011) - University of Kentucky Bands will honor late music educator Charles "Chuck" Campbell at the sixth annual Parent’s Day Concert. The concert featuring UK Symphony Band, conducted by George Boulden, and UK Wind Ensemble, conducted by John Cody Birdwell, will take the stage at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Singletary Center for the Arts Concert Hall. Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $5 for students, senior citizens and children.

Kentucky music educator Chuck Campbell, remembered as a great mentor and model, passed away in July from pancreatic cancer. "He daily demonstrated his passion for music and teaching in the classroom, on the football field, and in the concert hall," says Boulden. "His legacy as a gifted music educator and leader in the Commonwealth of Kentucky served as a model for countless musicians for many years."

Campbell served as a public school band director for 31 years directing bands at East Hardin High School, George Rogers Clark High School and North Hardin High School.

As a part of the tribute concert to Campbell, the UK Symphony Band will play "The Klaxon March" by Henry Fillmore; "Resting in the Peace of His Hands" by John Wesley Gibson; "Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna" by Franz Von Suppé; and a medley from "The Wizard of Oz" arranged by James Barnes.

The UK Wind Ensemble will perform Overture to "Candide" by Leonard Bernstein; "Who’s Who in Navy Blue" by John Philip Sousa; "Be Thou My Vision" by David Gillingham; and "Armenian Dances" by Alfred Reed.

The concert will also feature trombone soloist, Bradley Kerns, who will perform "Persuasion" by Sammy Nestico. Kerns is a lecturer at UK School of Music.

The UK Bands program is made up of the UK Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band and Concert Band, as well as the Wildcat Marching Band, UK Basketball Pep Band and several other performance ensembles in the award-winning UK School of Music at the UK College of Fine Arts.

The UK Symphony Band is composed of music majors, as well as a variety of other talented musicians from across the university campus. The group performs music for large and chamber ensembles and has been invited to perform at the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) Conference in 2008 and 2010, and will be a featured ensemble at the KMEA Conference in February 2012.

The UK Wind Ensemble is made up of the finest wind and percussion performers in the UK School of Music. As the centerpiece of a band program that has served the Commonwealth of Kentucky for more than 100 years, the ensemble continues a tradition of professional-level performances to audiences throughout the state and beyond. In the summer of 2008, the UK Wind Ensemble participated in a 10-day concert tour of the People's Republic of China. The ensemble has also released several commercially published recordings and has been invited to perform at national and regional conferences for the College Band Directors National Association, and for the KMEA Conference.

"The students in our ensembles represent some of the finest musicians in the UK School of Music, and we are excited to perform this special program of music for you," says Birdwell.
