Connecting Students With Employers

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 7, 2009) - One of the University of Kentucky's most important services is connecting its students and alumni with potential employers, and a major way that happens is through the annual career fair under way this week.

UK's James W. Stuckert Career Center is hosting the 2009 Career Fair Oct. 7 and 8 from noon to 4 p.m. each day in the Student Center Grand Ballroom.

On Wednesday, Oct. 7, the employers will be from organizations in the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and math). On Thursday, Oct. 8, there will be employers from nonprofits, communications organizations and other businesses.

The event is significant for students whether they are freshmen or graduate students or anywhere in between.

"This is a professional career event for all students," said Francene Gilmer, director of the center. "Attendees can receive information about full-time career opportunities and internships.  Some company representatives will create an interview schedule based on their interest from a student’s 30-second 'elevator speech,' as it is often called."

Approximately 150 companies are in attendance this year that have full-time, internship, and co-op positions available. The fair is open to all UK students, as well as recent graduates and alumni. The companies will be talking to all types of students about internship and career opportunities. All majors are recommended to take advantage of this once-a-semester opportunity.  Professional business attire is recommended, and participants should bring 25 or more copies of their resumes.

"These career fairs offer wonderful opportunities for students to interact with employers and get an immediate sense of the job market," said Gilmer. "It’s also a great way to test their job search skills taught by career center staff members."

To view a complete list of companies that will be at the fair, visit the Career Center's Web site at www.uky.edu/CareerCenter or call (859) 257-2746. Pre-registration is not required.
