Discovery Seminar Proposal Deadline Dec. 15

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 19, 2009) - Faculty from all sectors of the University of Kentucky are invited to submit proposals for Discovery Seminar Program (DSP) courses for the fall 2010 and spring 2011 semesters. Designed for first-year, firstterm students at UK, the program is entering its 15th year and remains one of the most exciting firstyear programs available to UK students.  The deadline to submit a course proposal is Dec. 15.

Interested faculty members may submit a proposal electronically to discovery@uky.edu. The electronic application can be accessed on the DSP's Web site, or at www.uky.edu/Provost/ChellgrenCenter/Discovery/files/ProposalForm.pdf

The DSP aims to provide first-year students with the most satisfying, exciting version of higher learning: small classes with engaging, challenging discussions with outstanding professors who are teaching about their work at the frontiers of knowledge.

Discovery Seminars are threehour courses with no more than 25 students in each. Each seminar satisfies one of the University Studies Program requirements in the natural sciences, social sciences, or the humanities. Courses are open to all incoming students.

Seminar faculty are recruited from all sectors and colleges of the university. Faculty who teach in the program do so within their regular course load or as an overload, with departmental chairperson and dean’s approval. Participation in the program is also open to graduate students who have won UK Provost’s Teaching Awards.

Faculty are expected to have excellent teaching records and be willing to participate in a teaching workshop especially designed for the DSP. Additional teaching forums are given at least monthly during the fall semester to enable faculty to share ideas and information, resolve problems, and learn of seminar teaching resources. Each semester DSP students participate in the DSP Showcase, a poster session to display some of the discoveries they have made during the semester. DSP faculty are expected to supervise their students in this venture.

For more information, please contact the DSP office at 2576894 or visit www.uky.edu/Discovery.

The deadline for a seminar proposal for 201011 is December 15, 2009. All proposals are reviewed by the DSP Advisory Committee and instructors will be notified of the committee’s decision.

The DSP is part of the UK Chellgren Center for Undergraduate Excellence, a collaboration among prestigious undergraduate programs at the university, including Education Abroad, eUreKa!, the Honors Program, Intercollegiate Debate, Living-Learning Communities and the Office of External Scholarships.
