Be aware of changes to the 2024-25 FAFSA form
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 6, 2023) — As University of Kentucky students begin preparing for the 2024-25 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), there are some significant changes to the form and process that faculty and staff need to be aware of.
The federal government is rolling out a simplified FAFSA for the 2024-25 academic year that promises to remove many barriers to completion for our students and their families. While final information is still pending, the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships encourages all staff and faculty to review the following updates:
- The 2024-25 FAFSA is expected to open sometime in December 2023. Students are encouraged to wait until January 2024 to complete the FAFSA.
- The 2024-25 FAFSA will be role-based, meaning only the questions the student, spouse or parent need to complete will be visible to them.
- The log-in will require all contributors to have a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID, regardless of whether they possess a Social Security number. Students who have previously completed a FAFSA will likely have an FSA ID and will continue to use it for the new form. Students who have not completed a FAFSA in the past and some contributors who previously did not need an FSA ID will need one for the new FAFSA. To set up an FSA ID, visit go.uky.edu/fsaid.
- The name for the need analysis results that are calculated after completing the FAFSA will be called the Student Aid Index (SAI) instead of the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The new name more accurately reflects how that number helps determine a student’s eligibility for financial aid.
OSFAS will share more information and guidance as more information is released; however, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the team at osfas@uky.edu.
