Call for volunteers: Full-scale crisis exercise to be held on UK’s campus

UKPD is looking for volunteers to assist with UK's full scale active aggressor exercise.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 24, 2024) — The University of Kentucky Police Department (UKPD) is preparing for an upcoming full-scale active aggressor drill on UK’s campus and is looking for volunteers to participate in the exercise on Thursday, May 30, 2024.

This exercise provides an opportunity for officers and first responders in the Lexington area to train for and respond to a high-stress, realistic active aggressor scenario. In order to make the scenario as realistic as possible, UKPD will rely on volunteer participation from our community to serve in a variety of roles including being victim actors, assisting in setup/takedown, helping with food and more.

Volunteers will be asked to serve from 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on May 30. To express your interest in participation, please register at go.uky.edu/crisis-exercise. UKPD will accept volunteers up until Friday, May 24. Volunteers will receive and email with more information once they register.

This training provides an opportunity for first responders to train and run drills that they cannot run while classes are in session. UKPD will work with personnel from UK HealthCare, UK Public Relations and the UK Emergency Operations Center to practice coordinating a response with internal and external stakeholders in the event of an active aggressor situation. Volunteering will give community members the opportunity to support local first responders and better prepare themselves for emergency situations.

Any questions regarding participation in the exercise can be directed to Ashley Chaney at ashley.chaney@uky.edu

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
