Capilouto Shares Information on Campus Resources for Those Impacted by Mall Incident

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 24, 2020) — President Eli Capilouto sent the following message regarding campus resources available to those impacted by yesterday's mall incident to the University of Kentucky community on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2020.

Dear Campus Community,

Reports late this afternoon of shootings at Fayette Mall provide another shock to all of us, in what already has been a season of disconcerting anxiety.

Early reports suggest that no students were physically hurt during this tragic incident, but at least some were onsite during the shootings.

As a community of concern and care, we must be a safe harbor for each other during these times. Our thoughts and prayers are with our Lexington community, the victims and their families and loved ones.

For our campus, our counseling center already is mobilizing resources and will reach out to those students who understandably may have been traumatized by this violence.

  • The UK Counseling Center main number is 859-257-8701.
  • If callers dial that number between now and 8 a.m. tomorrow, they will reach our phone service to help connect them to resources. Starting at 8 a.m. tomorrow, callers will be connected with the daytime on-call clinician.
  • You also may visit the UK Counseling Center website, https://www.uky.edu/counselingcenter/, to learn more about the variety of services provided.

I urge anyone in need, or suffering in the aftermath of senseless violence like this, to reach out and connect.

Asking for help in a time of need is not a sign of weakness; it is a sign of strength. It is an acknowledgment that we are part of a community that cares.

This is who we are.

This is what we do.
