College of Nursing Kicks Off 50th Anniversary Celebration
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 26, 2010) − The University of Kentucky College of Nursing is celebrating 50 years of providing quality nursing education during the 2010 -2011 academic year. To kick off a year of special events, an ice cream social was held yesterday on the front lawn of the college.
The College of Nursing, located in the six-story College of Nursing Building, is located just across the street from UK Chandler Hospital and Kentucky Children's Hospital. It offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) degrees. The College has a well-established and continually growing faculty research program, an active academic faculty practice program and continuing education program. The College's graduate program is tied for 26th in the nation, according to U.S.News & World Report in its 2008 edition of "America's Best Graduate Schools." In addition, the UK PhD Program in nursing is ranked 10th out of 99 private and public PhD programs in nursing listed in the (2008) Academic analytics, LLC Report.
“The UK College of Nursing has a long tradition of excellence in preparing both BSN and graduate prepared nurses for the Commonwealth," said Jane Kirschling, dean of the College of Nursing. "Every day our alumni make in difference in the lives they touch – whether they are working within health care, in nursing education, or as a nurse scientist. The College’s faculty and staff send their congratulations to all of our alumni, as well as current students, on being a part of our rich heritage.”
Other celebratory events planned for the year include a Student, Faculty and Staff Picnic, Founder's Day reception at Maxwell Place hosted by President Lee T. Todd and First Lady Patsy Todd, College of Nursing Scholarship Banquet, College of Nursing Alumni Association Homecoming Brunch honoring 50 outstanding alumni, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Pinning and Graduate Hooding Ceremony, and the 50th Anniversary Gala and Hall of Fame Induction.
