Donate Your Unwanted Items to the Give and Go Donation Stations
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 18, 2019) — Starting Nov. 22 through the December holiday break, the University of Kentucky’s Recycling Program will be partnering with Goodwill Industries of the Bluegrass, to place Give and Go Donations Stations at all the residence halls. The stations will be set up in the lobby of every residence hall on campus for students to drop off the items they wish to donate.
Items collected can vary from clothes, shoes, bedding, un-used toiletries, furniture and décor to nonperishable food. Nonfood items will be donated to Goodwill and all food will be donated to the Big Blue Pantry to help fellow students.
“We hope that students use this opportunity to donate usable items and nonperishable food, diverting them away from the landfill, so we can send them to local charities/groups who can use them,” said Esther Moberly, manager of the UK Waste Recycling and Trucking Department. “This program is part of a large campus-wide effort to decrease how much is thrown away, which is a goal in the university’s Sustainability Plan."
Last year a total of 21,024 pounds (10.5 tons) was donated at the end of the school year in May 2019. Nonperishable food donations made up 1,360 pounds (.89 tons) of that total.
The Give and Go Donation Station program is a collaboration among several UK departments — Recycling, Trucking, Residence Life, Campus Housing, Auxiliary Services, Sustainability, Big Blue Pantry and Goodwill Industries of the Bluegrass. The goal of the program is to encourage students to donate rather than throw out usable items.
