Kentucky Collegians Honored for Academic Achievement
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 11, 2011) – Top high school seniors from across the Commonwealth and 10 other states can now call themselves "Kentucky Collegians."
A total of 156 students from 11 different states (Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Tennessee, West Virginia, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Missouri, New York, and New Jersey) were honored for their academic achievement Tuesday night at the annual Kentucky Collegians event, sponsored by the UK Office of Undergraduate Admission and University Registrar.
"This time of year, high school seniors have so many major decisions to make," said Don Witt, vice provost for enrollment management. "We just wanted them to have a special night when they can take some time to be congratulated for so many years of hard work and dedication to their studies."
UK President Eli Capilouto was the keynote speaker for the evening.
"It was a pleasure to join the more than 150 high school senior and their families during UK's Kentucky Collegians Event," Capilouto said. "They are an impressive group of students who show extraordinary academic prowess and a passion for service and outreach. I look forward to seeing many of them in blue next fall."
President Capilouto helped to recognize each student with a Kentucky Collegians certificate in a UK diploma cover, along with an official scholarship award letter.
"It was a special opportunity to showcase the value we place on the undergraduate experience at UK — each Collegian walked away from the reception with a scholarship in hand," Capilouto said.
"We think it is extremely important that we honor students for their achievements and provide them with information about what the University of Kentucky can offer them as high-achieving students," said Brian Troyer, director of undergraduate recruitment.
During the evening, students were able to converse with faculty and staff and have their questions answered about the opportunities available to them at UK.
"Thanks to support from across campus, the evening was very personal for our students," Troyer said. "Faculty representing UK’s Council of Endowed Professors and Chairs, as well as current Singletary Scholars and other UK staff from all of UK’s colleges and other areas such as Education Abroad, the BS/BA/MD Program, Undergraduate Research, and the Chellgren Center Undergraduate Excellence (to name just a few) each hosted a table of top students and their families during dinner."
"We are excited about the number of top students that are considering the University of Kentucky, and we were pleased to celebrate their achievements and help them begin to see a successful future for themselves at UK," Witt said.
