Late Night Hunger Satisfied

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 4, 2011) -- When the books close after hours of intense study, the first thing many students notice is the grumbling of their empty stomachs.

But midnight munching or even an invigorating cup of coffee have been hard to find on campus – until now, that is.

Beginning Tuesday evening, Nov. 8, University of Kentucky Dining Services will extend hours of service until midnight Sunday through Thursday at the Commons, Commons Starbucks ®, Ovid’s Café and Ovid’s Starbucks ®.

“We are very happy to help President Capilouto respond to the desires of our students in providing longer hours with menu options at our south campus dining facilities,” said Vice President for Student Affairs Robert Mock.

The change is a result of a conversation President Eli Capilouto had last week with students representing Student Government Association, Global Scholars Program and Emerging Leaders Institute. Several pointed out that campus dining options were rather restrictive late at night, especially those near the south campus residence halls. Some had safety concerns about walking to an off-campus restaurant for a midnight snack.

“One of the best ways we can ensure a positive college experience is to listen to the ideas of our students,” said President Eli Capilouto. “UK students work hard, and I’m proud of how enthusiastic our staff was in implementing this change for our students.”

“I know students will be excited at how quickly the new administration has responded to our needs and concerns,” said Student Government President Micah Fielden. “Keeping dining locations open late provides a safe location for students to socialize and study while they eat.”

Capilouto, Fielden and Mock will be at the Commons site at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, to usher in the new hours of operation at the south campus eateries. Students who attend the unveiling will receive a free beverage between 9-9:30 that evening at the Commons location only.

The menu at Commons will change at 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays to a $5.50 all-you-care-to-eat option. Students will be able to choose from pizza, pasta, Panini, fresh fruit, salad, soups, chili, cereal, cookies or brownies, ice cream, burgers, fries, and chicken, catfish and barbecue sandwiches. While the fiesta station at Ovid’s Café will close at 10 p.m., the deli, grill, and Panini/salad stations will be open until midnight. The service at Commons Starbucks and Ovid’s Starbucks remain the same.

All four locations will accept cash, credit, Flex Dollars and Plus Account. Dining swipes will not be accepted at Commons after 9 p.m. due to the reduced price of the all-you-care-to-eat late night menu. Students can dine-in or carry out at all locations.
