LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 27, 2019) What are our current beliefs about law enforcement? Do we believe the police serve and protect communities? Or do we believe they serve and protect their own self interests? To help answer this question, the University of Kentucky Police Department invites all members of the community to attend the fall session of Citizens Police Academy (CPA).

“You think you have an opinion about the police, or you think you understand a lot of it,” Marco Fricker, UKPD Police recruit said. “This is a really good opportunity just to see what it really is.”

Considered the cornerstone of community policing, CPA teaches participants why police stop certain individuals for questioning, what to expect during a traffic stop and how to prevent theft. Participants also conduct simulated traffic stops, work as a team to protect dignitaries, and have seconds to determine whether someone is a threat.

Classes are offered every Thursday from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 10 to Dec. 19, with the exception of Nov. 28 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Participants will gain a greater understanding of topics ranging from criminal procedure to K-9 operations. They will see the duties of an officer firsthand as they participate in a “ride along” with a UK Police officer. Upon completion of the class, they will receive a certificate and take part in a formal graduation ceremony. Each graduate can then join the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association, which deepens existing relationships between members and the police.

The Citizens Police Academy is free and open to all UK faculty, staff, students and members of the community. Participants must be 18 years or older and satisfactorily pass an electronic background check. Refreshments provided.
