LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 20, 2021) — What should you do if your automobile suddenly leaves you stranded? It pays to be prepared.
University of Kentucky Transportation Services offers free jump-starts as well as additional discounted motorist assistance services for students, staff and faculty. Add these numbers to your phone contacts:
During regular office hours (7:30 a.m.-5 p.m.):
Call UK Transportation Services: 859-257-5757
After hours, weekends and holidays:
Call Roberts Heavy Duty Towing & Recovery: 859-231-0197
You may be ready for cooler weather, but your automobile battery may not. Cold weather can cause outright battery failure or sluggish starts. UK Transportation Services offers free on-campus battery jump-starts for all UK parking permit holders, as well as UK HealthCare patients and their visitors.
Free jump-starts are available on campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Use the above contact information, which is also conveniently located on the reverse side of your UK parking permit.
Additional motorist assistance services are available at a discounted rate, both on and off campus. These include:
- flat tire changes;
- off-campus battery jump-starts;
- vehicle towing;
- vehicle lock-out services; and
- out-of-fuel assistance (standard rate plus the cost of fuel).
UK Transportation Services contracts with Lexington-based Roberts Heavy Duty Towing & Recovery for a variety of these vehicle services. If you’re a UK parking permit holder and run into issues anywhere within Fayette County, you can take advantage of all of the above services for $59 if they’re provided within New Circle Road and $59 plus $3.50 per mile if provided outside of New Circle Road.
To be eligible for the UK discount, the contractor may ask for your valid UK parking permit number prior to providing the service. For your convenience, tow truck drivers accept cash, check, or credit cards at the scene.

The University of Kentucky is increasingly the first choice for students, faculty and staff to pursue their passions and their professional goals. In the last two years, Forbes has named UK among the best employers for diversity, and INSIGHT into Diversity recognized us as a Diversity Champion four years running. UK is ranked among the top 30 campuses in the nation for LGBTQ* inclusion and safety. UK has been judged a “Great College to Work for" three years in a row, and UK is among only 22 universities in the country on Forbes' list of "America's Best Employers." We are ranked among the top 10 percent of public institutions for research expenditures — a tangible symbol of our breadth and depth as a university focused on discovery that changes lives and communities. And our patients know and appreciate the fact that UK HealthCare has been named the state’s top hospital for five straight years. Accolades and honors are great. But they are more important for what they represent: the idea that creating a community of belonging and commitment to excellence is how we honor our mission to be not simply the University of Kentucky, but the University for Kentucky.
