UK International Center, CELT launch Collaborative Online International Learning Community
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 15, 2025) – A new Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Community, aimed at empowering faculty to design and deliver globally connected course modules through online collaboration with international peers, is now accepting applications.
The COIL Learning Community will support faculty in developing virtual exchange partnerships with colleagues at universities around the world. Through the program, instructors will co-create modules that bring together students from different countries to engage in transnational learning experiences. In a COIL module, UK students typically will collaborate on a project with students from an institution outside the U.S., sharing tasks, practicing cross-cultural communication and teamwork.
“COIL is a fantastic way for students to have a quality global experience without leaving the classroom,” said Sue Roberts, associate provost for internationalization. “Although we will always value the impact of going on an education abroad program, COIL is a global experience we can offer at no additional cost for students. This kind of project-based learning can prepare students for the global workforce and instill key skills in collaboration and problem-solving that are vital for future career success.”
COIL Learning Community participants will benefit from structured support through:
- An introductory two-day COIL Basics Workshop during Winter Break (2025-26)
- Learning Community Program: A series of seven intensive Learning Community sessions (with materials and lunch provided) during the Spring 2026 semester
- The UK COIL teaching and learning symposium (December 2027).
Faculty from all disciplines are encouraged to apply to participate in the inaugural cohort. Each COIL Learning Community participant will embed their COIL module in an undergraduate course that will be taught at UK in Fall 2026 or Spring ’27.
“Participants in the COIL learning community will engage in creative and cross-disciplinary work with dedicated support for the design and implementation of global learning experiences in a wide range of courses,” said Trey Conatser, assistant provost for teaching and learning and director of the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning. “We’ll explore unique aspects such as identifying and working with international colleagues, preparing students to engage with global peers and leveraging technology effectively for partnered courses. Because COIL is flexible to the needs of different curricula, there are many possibilities for faculty who are interested in participating.”
