UK Offers Chinese Language and Culture Spring Break Camp

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 5, 2018) — Spring break is right around the corner and parents will be looking for activities to keep their children engaged throughout the week. The University of Kentucky Confucius Institute (UKCI) has the perfect solution to ensure children have a fun and educational break —  Chinese Language and Culture Spring Break Camp.

The camp will run from April 2-6, with activities beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m. each day, on the UK campus in the UKCI offices located in the lower level of the Lucille Little Fine Arts Library and Learning Center.

The program, designed for children ages 6-12, will provide opportunities for students to learn about Chinese culture, games and language. Under the guidance of experienced UKCI specialists, all camp participants will learn simple Chinese martial arts (including tai chi), calligraphy and painting, and crafts such as lantern-making and paper cutting. Students will also learn about Chinese music by singing Chinese songs and hearing traditional Chinese instruments, such as the guzheng and erhu. Students will also learn Chinese phrases for beginners.

Students said that some of their favorite parts were learning how to make Chinese knot bracelets and eating dumplings.

Vijaya Sivaraj, the mother of one of last year’s campers wrote,“[My daughter] thoroughly enjoyed every day at camp.”
