LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 2, 2022) — The University of Kentucky has received the Jesse L. Moore Supplier 2022 Diversity Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and only print diversity and inclusion publication in higher education.

The INSIGHT Into Diversity Jesse L. Moore 2022 Supplier Diversity Award is a national recognition honoring colleges and universities that take proactive steps to support and engage with minority-owned businesses through supplier diversity offices, unique programs and leading initiatives. Winners will be included in the April 2022 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

The recipients were selected by INSIGHT Into Diversity based on their efforts to engage and retain suppliers from underrepresented groups.

“We are very humbled and honored to receive the Jesse L. Moore Supplier 2022 Diversity Award,” said Barry Swanson, UK’s chief procurement officer. “We, Marilyn Clark, UK’s diversity supplier especially, have worked very hard with the community and diverse business enterprises to help them grow their expertise and ability to participate as our supplier and the supplier of others. We are committed to continue growing the program for the community at large.”

UK was selected because of our dedication to growing expenditures in all categories of diverse supplier, with the primary goal of positively impacting the university and beyond.

Some of that activity includes:

“When it comes to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), colleges and universities have traditionally put their resources into recruiting and retaining diverse students and employees — however, there is a third leg of DEI that focuses on supplier diversity. The INSIGHT Into Diversity Jesse L. Moore Supplier Diversity Award, named in honor of longtime advocate and economic development pioneer Jesse L. Moore for his leadership in promoting supplier diversity and the success of minority-owned businesses, is our way of ensuring this critical area of DEI also gets recognized for the important role that it plays,” said Lenore Pearlstein, co-publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
