UK, SEC Rivals Teaming up for Academics

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 5, 2010) – Though they're rivals on the court and field, the University of Kentucky will team up with the other Southeastern Conference (SEC) schools to reach out to prospective students.

For the second year in a row, all 12 schools in the SEC will come together to hold joint college fairs for area students and information breakfasts for career center staff members and guidance counselors.

Last year, fairs were held in Columbus, Ohio and Chicago, Ill. This year, the SEC schools will send representatives to the Washington, D.C. area, hosting fairs around Fairfax County,Va.

The first college fair, open only to Fairfax County Public School students and their parents, is from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, at Oakton High School.

Another fair will be held from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 8, at the Waterford at Fair Oaks, which is adjacent to Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax. Students and families from the Fairfax County Public School system as well as students from all of the surrounding counties and cities in Northern Virginia and neighboring states are invited to attend.

At each location, the college fairs will give high school students and their families the chance to meet representatives from each school in the SEC in order to learn more about each institution.

Representing the University of Kentucky will be Associate Director of Undergraduate Admission and Associate Registrar Stephen Barnett, along with Brian Troyer, associate director of undergraduate admission.

"We are extremely excited to show students in the Washington, D.C. area the opportunities available to them at the University of Kentucky and the other schools in the SEC," said Barnett. "By working together, we can reach even more students while saving valuable resources for our institutions."
