UK United Way Vital to Community

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 4 , 2010) -- The annual University of Kentucky United Way Campaign kicks off today and runs through Oct. 31 with a $500,000 goal.

Over the next few weeks, United Way volunteers from each UK department will meet with employees to discuss participation in the fundraising campaign.  All employees who make a donation to the UK United Way campaign will be eligible for a campus-wide prize drawing. Prizes will be drawn at random on Oct. 18 and Nov. 5. Participation is voluntary.

Last year, members of the UK community contributed $446,478.31 to the United Way of the Bluegrass campaign. The donations made by thousands of UK faculty and staff provided basic need and crisis services to over 42,000 individuals and families, including some of their co-workers and colleagues.

“Even though we continue to face economic challenges, we are confident that the UK family can be counted on once again to do our part,” said Tom Harris, UK vice president of university relations and co-chair of the UK United Way Campaign.

“United Way makes it possible to do things no one person or organization can do alone,” added Ann Smith, chief administrative officer for UK HealthCare and UK United Way Campaign co-chair .
