Researcher Daugherty Honored as Mentor

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 2, 2010) — A leading University of Kentucky scientist and medical researcher has been named the recipient of the 2010 Mentor of Women Award, presented by the Women’s Leadership Committee of the American Heart Association Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology (ATVB).

Alan Daugherty, senior associate dean for research in the UK College of Medicine and director of the UK Cardiovascular Research Center, will accept the award Friday, April 9, at the ATVB Scientific Sessions to be held in San Francisco. Daugherty also serves as the Gill Foundation chair in preventive cardiology; professor of medicine and physiology; and associate chair of medicine for physician-scientist training. Daugherty is the immediate past chair of the ATVB Council, and in 2009 was named the American Heart Association Science Advocate of the Year.

The Council on ATVB works to further research and treatments in the fields of arteriosclerosis, thrombosis and vascular medicine, in support of the mission and objectives of the American Heart Association.
