Expanded Interventional Radiology Facility Offers Less Invasive Treatment Options

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 5, 2021) –  UK HealthCare opened its new Interventional Services facility on March 1 at UK Chandler Hospital. Offering less invasive alternatives to traditional surgery, this newly renovated, 50,000 square foot facility will have expanded capability to accommodate the growing number of patients who qualify for a less invasive surgery.

“There is no better example of what the power of advanced medicine at UK HealthCare really means other than this new facility with its state-of-the-art technology, futuristic design and most importantly, a very caring, empathic and highly skilled staff and providers,” said Dr. Driss Raissi, medical director for interventional services and the interventional radiology division chief. "Kentuckians will have access to world-class minimally invasive surgeries without having to leave the comfort of their home state.”

In the field of radiology, diagnostic radiologists use medical imaging studies to evaluate the internal structures of the body to diagnose injuries, illnesses and physical anomalies. Physicians who practice interventional radiology also interpret imaging studies, but they can take it a step further. Interventional radiologists use state-of-the-art imaging such as CT, fluoroscopy and ultrasound to perform image-guided, minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat conditions throughout the body such as cancer or stroke. As a result, they’re able to use the least invasive techniques possible and reduce the patient’s cost, pain, recovery time and surgical risk.

The new space features nine new procedure rooms; 24 of the 46 prep and recovery rooms will open in spring 2021. The remaining rooms, as well as five additional procedure rooms, will open as patient volume dictates. Two new CT scan rooms and a number of flex spaces are included that can accommodate future needs and projected growth.

In April 2021, the Nexaris suite will open. One of only a handful of such facilities in the country,  the Nexaris Angio-CT is an imaging system capable of seamlessly integrating CT, angiography, and ultrasound images during a single procedure.

The interventional services suite is located on the second floor of Chandler Hospital.
