LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 24, 2022) — Have you been wanting to get involved on campus but not known where to begin? Now is your chance! The University of Kentucky Student Government Association (UKSGA), housed in the Office for Student Success is holding elections for its available positions.

The position openings include student body president and vice president; college-specific senators and undergraduate and graduate at-large senators. In total, there are 44 available Senate seats.

College-specific senators are representatives of their college only, and they are asked to vote and make decisions with their classmates in mind. Undergraduate at-large senators represent the student body more generally. Their decisions and voting patterns will impact the student body as a whole. Graduate at-large senators are the same, but for graduate-level students.

SGA allows students to gain confidence in themselves while producing effective change. It’s one of the larger student organizations on campus, which creates space for educating and connecting with others. While SGA is a great organization to join to get involved, there is more to it than meets the eye.

“SGA means so much to me and its members because it is an opportunity for any student at UK to make positive change in our community,” said Student Body President Michael Hawse. “From providing services to advocating for systemic change in our state, UKSGA is essential to making sure that students can be heard and represented in conversations all across campus and the Commonwealth.”

  • Applications for elections close at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31.
  • The presidential debate will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, location to be determined.
  • Voting opens at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, and ends 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 1.

Stay up to date on all election information by following the UK and SGA social media channels.

“Even if you aren’t interested in serving in a role, it is so essential to know the UKSGA is always available to listen and advocate on behalf of any and every student at UK,” said Hawse.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.
