New Geology Internships Available Summer 2022, Applications Open Until March 21

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 1, 2022) — The Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS) is accepting applications for the new, 10-week Paul Edwin Potter Internship Program. The summer program is open to undergraduate and master's students interested in geology and related fields.

The 2022 program will run from May 23 to June 29. The application period ends March 21 and interviews will be scheduled between April 4 - 15. The program is funded through a generous gift from the late Dr. Paul Potter, professor emeritus of geology at the University of Cincinnati and long-time friend of KGS.

Interested students can apply for geoscience-related projects focusing on sinkholes, radon potential, environmental justice, seismic data, paleo-fluids in mineral districts or landslides. The program’s supplemental curriculum of professional development opportunities include weekly discussion groups and field experiences that culminate with the development of a research product for an internship showcase. There are six positions open for UK students interested in dedicating 40 hours per week to expand their skills in machine learning, lidar, drone use, GIS or fluid inclusion analysis.

KGS places a high value on diversity of experiences and cultural perspectives. Therefore, we encourage applications from all interested and eligible students. The inaugural, 2022 program is limited to UK students, but we plan to expand those criteria in the near future. Please review our internship website or job posting for more information about the program and how to apply.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
