UK HealthCare Opens Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinic at Cardinal Hill

PM&R Clinic Opening, UK HealthCare
UK HealthCare Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) is now providing services at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 8, 2022) — UK HealthCare Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) is now providing services at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital.

UK’s PM&R department utilizes a multidisciplinary team to care for patients who have severe neurological or musculoskeletal impairments with the goal of restoring each patient to their highest possible level of medical, psychological, social and vocational function.

Over the last five years, the clinic has grown steadily, nearly doubling outpatient visits.

Last May, the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees approved the lease of space by UK PM&R from Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital operated by Encompass Health. The space leased is being used by UK HealthCare to operate the outpatient services formerly offered by Cardinal Hill. This agreement will not include or affect the inpatient or skilled rehabilitation staff or services at Cardinal Hill.

The new clinic space will offer a more seamless continuum of care for patients transferred from UK to Cardinal Hill as inpatients, enabling them to see their UK doctors for follow-up care and receive their ongoing therapy at Cardinal Hill. The move will also allow UK to expand its UK PM&R outpatient clinic to the entire community that was previously located at UK Good Samaritan Hospital, as well as expand upon outpatient therapy services already at the Cardinal Hill site.

“We are excited to have all of our team located and practicing out of one space in the new clinic at Cardinal Hill,” said Dean Hanlon, enterprise director of Rehabilitation Services for UK HealthCare. “Our UK HealthCare patients will benefit from ease of access to the facility with convenient parking and drop-off areas for our patients, and we look forward to serving them.”

An additional 13,835 square feet will be used for clinic space and the completed building includes 27 clinic rooms.

“We are thrilled to have this new space that allows for a much-needed expansion to keep up with the growing needs of our UK HealthCare patients,” said Susan McDowell, M.D., chairperson of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. “This move will enable us to more effectively meet the rehabilitation needs of our musculoskeletal and neurological patients while continuing to advance our innovative care.”

The Department of UK Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has been located at Cardinal Hill since the department was formed in 1982. Encompass Health (formerly HealthSouth) bought Cardinal Hill from the Kentucky Easter Seals Society (KESS) in May 2015.
