UK School of Journalism and Media, School of Information Science host public talk on New Deal media activism
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 27, 2024) — Josh Shepperd will deliver “New Deal Media Activism: The Framework for US Media Theory” at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, in room 331 of the Gatton Student Center on the University of Kentucky campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Shepperd, an assistant professor of media studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, designs applied policy and public humanities projects for the Library of Congress, serves as a director of the Radio Preservation Task Force and Sound Submissions Project and is the founding associate editor of "Resonance: The Journal of Sound and Culture" (University of California Press).
Shepperd will discuss concepts from his new book, “Shadow of the New Deal: The Victory of Public Broadcasting” and his collaborations with the Library of Congress.
“The question that the book attempts to answer is where did public media come from in the United States and why,” Shepperd said. “What's unique about American public media is that it began with a principle of democracy and a mission statement.”
The event is co-hosted by the UK School of Journalism and Media and the School of Information Science.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.
