Dress the part: UK Theatre and Dance, Surplus collaborate for costume sale

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 19, 2025) — The University of Kentucky Department of Theatre and Dance is partnering with UK Surplus Property for a vintage and costume clothing sale 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the College of Fine Arts, 465 Rose Street in Lexington.

The sale is open to the public.

Lisa Wilson, Department of Theatre and Dance costume shop manager, said all items for sale are gently used pieces that the department has held onto for several years.

“We have a wide range of items, like dresses, sweaters, suits, shoes, hats and vintage dresses,” Wilson said.

She added that some of the pieces represent clothing from the 1960s, ’70s, ’80s and contemporary fashions.

This sale is the first collaboration between the Department of Theatre and Dance and Surplus Property.

“We are hoping to have strong community interest this year to potentially make this a yearly event,” Wilson said.

Costumes come from past UK Theatre and Dance productions, including “Footloose,” “Spring Awakening,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Zombietown,” “The Winter’s Tale,” “Spelling Bee,” and several other shows.
