Faculty and staff: Download SafeZone to continue receiving text and phone call UK Alerts

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 8, 2025) — The University of Kentucky remains committed to the safety of the campus community. One of the most important tools UK uses to keep the campus informed during emergencies is the UK Alert system, which provides timely information and guidance when it matters most.
Beginning Nov. 1, the UK Alert system will integrate with the SafeZone app — a step forward in improving how safety messages are delivered quickly and reliably.
“This integration is about enhancing reliability and accessibility,” said Chief Joe Monroe of the University of Kentucky Police Department. “By linking UK Alerts with SafeZone, we’re ensuring that emergency messages reach you through multiple channels, as fast as possible.”
What’s changing for faculty and staff
Starting Nov. 1, opting in to receive UK Alerts via phone call and text message will now be done through the SafeZone app for UK faculty and staff.
Here’s what you need to know:
- To receive phone call and text alerts: Employees must download the SafeZone app and register with a valid mobile phone number.
- In addition to these alert types, SafeZone users can also choose to receive push notifications through the app.
- If you do not download SafeZone, you will continue receiving UK Alerts by email only.
- All employees remain automatically enrolled in email alerts, regardless of app use.
- All students will be automatically enrolled in all alert types, regardless of app use.
How to download and register
To stay fully connected and receive all alert options:

“Safety is a shared responsibility,” Monroe said. “Downloading the SafeZone app is one simple but powerful way we can all stay connected and prepared. Together, we make our campus a safer place for everyone.”
