Important safety information for the incoming winter storm

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 23, 2026) — The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Lexington and the surrounding areas. This system is bringing significant snowfall and dangerously cold temperatures to our area Saturday through Monday morning.
We are closely monitoring forecast changes to best coordinate our resources in responding to this winter storm. Updates and changes to campus operations will be communicated via www.uky.edu/alerts.
Here are important reminders to protect yourself and others during winter storms:
- Limit your time outside.
- Temperatures will be bitterly cold, with wind chills well below freezing. Exposure to these conditions can quickly lead to frostbite or hypothermia.
- If you need to go outside, dress appropriately. Wear warm layers, hats and gloves.
- Watch for UK Alerts.
- A UK Alert will be sent if there is an immediate threat requiring immediate action or major changes to campus operations. All students, faculty and staff will automatically receive UK Alerts via email.
- Important reminder:
- Students: All students are automatically signed up for UK Alert via phone call and text if they have entered a phone number into myUK.
- Faculty and staff: You must now download the SafeZone app and enter a valid cell phone number in order to opt in to phone call and text alerts.

- Keep your devices charged and download the SafeZone app.
- The SafeZone app can be used to request help from the UK Police Department in both emergencies and non-emergencies.
- Ensure exterior doors and windows are closed, and indoor cabinets and doors remain open.
- This will keep warm air inside your homes and allow for better air circulation and help prevent pipes from freezing.
