UK Women & Philanthropy Network Awards $251,000 to Seven UK Academic Initiatives

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 2, 2017) – Seven academic initiatives at the University of Kentucky have been awarded a total of $251,000 by the UK Women & Philanthropy Network, an organization committed to bringing together women who “share the ambition of building a better UK through philanthropy,” announced Paula Pope, director of philanthropic engagement with UK Philanthropy.

“The selection process for the UK Women & Philanthropy Network academic grants is a rigorous and competitive one,” Pope said. “Each proposal is thoroughly reviewed by the membership and evaluated on their merits of supporting the academic mission of the University of Kentucky, creativity and innovation, and demonstrating measurable student academic outcomes. We commend each award winner and thank all who submitted a proposal. They were all excellent.”

Grant funds were awarded to support the following programs or projects:

College of Nursing

“hCats to Appalachia: An Interprofessional Service Learning Program to Promote Health and Wellness in Kentucky,” $19,800

 

Science Outreach Center

“PEPP II Undergraduate Enhancement Program,” $27,000

 

Gatton College of Business and Economics

“Increasing Opportunities for Women in the MBA Program,” $50,000

 

Undergraduate Education

“Kentucky Scholar Intern Program,” $27,000

“ IAmAWomanInSTEM Student Leadership,” $50,000 

 

Interprofessional Healthcare Residential College

“Improving Students’ Sense of Belonging, Persistence and Success,” $27,200

 

College of Engineering “Reading the Invisible Library: An International Research Experience for Undergraduates,” $50,000

The University of Kentucky Women & Philanthropy Network is an organization committed to bringing together women who share the ambition of building a better UK through philanthropy. Under the leadership of former UK President Lee T. Todd Jr., the UK Women & Philanthropy Network was co-founded by former UK First Lady Patsy Todd and Nawanna Privett as a viable and meaningful way to recognize the essential and continuing role of women in the life and progress of the university, said Pope.

Since its establishment, the UK Women & Philanthropy Network has awarded grants for scholarships, fellowships, education abroad, research and special programs totaling nearly $1.6 million.

Membership in the organization is open to all interested women. A $1,000 annual contribution is required and the pool of contributions is awarded in full to proposals approved by the membership.
