UK Percussion Hosts Timpani Workshop With Bill Wiggins

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 27, 2018) — The University of Kentucky Percussion Studies program will co-sponsor a workshop on timpani performance practice by Bill Wiggins, associate professor of timpani and percussion at the Blair School of Music of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

The workshop will run 12:30 to 1:50 p.m. Thursday, March 1, in the Rehearsal Hall of the Singletary Center for the Arts. The workshop is free and open to the public.

Until his retirement in July 2015, Bill Wiggins served as principal timpanist of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, holding that position since 1969. He can be heard on recordings on the Naxos, Decca, Mercury and Magnatone labels including Grammy Award-winning recordings of the music of Michael Daugherty, Stephan Paulus, Joseph Schwantner and Joan Tower. 

In addition to his tenure with the Nashville Symphony, Wiggins continues as principal timpanist with the Peninsula Music Festival Orchestra of Door County, Wisconsin, conducted by Victor Yampolsky. Wiggins is an artist endorser of Pearl/Adams percussion products, JG Percussion (timpani), Mike Balter Mallets (keyboards) and Sabian Cymbals.
