Lecture to Explore Creating More Inclusive Music Education Spaces
LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 23, 2018) — Joyce McCall, postdoctoral scholar and visiting professor of music education at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, will deliver "Minding Cultural Distances Between Self and Others in Our Music Spaces," a speech presented by University of Kentucky's Division of Music Education and Music Therapy in the School of Music. The event will begin 6 p.m. Friday, April 27, at the Niles Gallery, located in the Lucille C. Little Fine Arts Library and Learning Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.
In her talk, McCall will discuss how her research has helped create more inclusive spaces in music education by focusing on issues of race, class and culture in educational settings. She is seasoned in the art of music and her credentials include a doctoral degree in music education from Arizona State University and a master’s degree in music education and bachelor’s degree in clarinet performance from the University of Southern Mississippi. In the fall of 2018, she will join the music education faculty at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as an assistant professor.
McCall's work has been published in the Journal of Music Teacher Education and presented at conferences for the American Educational Research Association, the National Association for Music Education, the Society for Music Teacher Education, the Mountain Lake Colloquium and the Arizona Music Educators Association.
A clarinetist in the United States Army Band from 1999-2013, McCall was awarded the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal for her exceptional work. Her assignments include the 151st Army Band in Montgomery, Alabama; 41st Army Band in Jackson, Mississippi; 36th Infantry Division Band in Austin, Texas; and 108th Army Band in Phoenix, Arizona.
McCall previously served as an assistant band director at MacArthur High School in Houston, Texas, and as a woodwind and marching band specialist in Alabama, Mississippi and Texas prior to her appointment at Indiana. She is also a member of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity for Women.
The UK School of Music in the UK College of Fine Arts has garnered national recognition for high-caliber education in opera, choral and instrumental music performance, as well as music education, music therapy, composition, and theory and music history.
