Barnes Up for Journalism Administrator of the Year

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 9, 2010) Beth E. Barnes, director of the University of Kentucky's School of Journalism and Telecommunications, is one of five finalists for the Scripps Howard Foundation Journalism Administrator of the Year award. The award, given in collaboration with the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, recognizes vision and leadership in an outstanding college journalism administrator, and includes a $10,000 cash prize.

An awards committee with the Scripps Howard Foundation began the process by nominating the five finalists. Next, the UK College of Communications and Information Studies Dean Dan O'Hair will send an official nomination letter, with four supporting letters from Barnes' colleagues. The awards committee will then select a winner based on these documents.

"I'm very flattered to be a finalist for this," Barnes said. "It's nice to be recognized for doing your job well. But an administrator is only as good as the faculty and students they serve, and I see this nomination as an acknowledgement of the terrific work going on in the School of Journalism and Telecommunications."

The Scripps Howard Foundation's mission is to advance the cause of the free press through support of excellence in journalism, quality journalism education and professional development. Winners of this year's journalism awards will be recognized at the Scripps Howard Foundation's National Journalism Awards dinner May 3, 2011 in Cincinnati.
