Grad School Accepting Sturgill Nominations

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 11, 2010) − The Graduate School at the University of Kentucky is now accepting nominations for the William B. Sturgill Award. This annually presented award is for a graduate faculty member who has provided outstanding contributions to graduate education at UK.

The recipient of the Sturgill Award will receive $2,000 as well as appropriate scholarly recognition of the achievement. The award will be presented at the University Founder's Day ceremony Feb. 22, 2011.

The Sturgill Award is named in honor of William B. Sturgill who contributed to higher education through organizing and serving as president of the Hazard Independent College Foundation, in addition to working with legislators to develop the community college system in the Commonwealth. Sturgill was born in Lackey, Ky., and graduated from UK in 1946. He has been involved in a variety of businesses, including executive and owner of several coal operations; East Kentucky Investment Company; Fourth Street and Gentry Tobacco Warehouses; and the Hartland Development Project. Sturgill served as both secretary of energy and secretary of agriculture under Gov. John Y. Brown Jr. He is currently involved in numerous civic organizations, boards and commissions. Sturgill served 18 years on UK's Board of Trustees, 10 of which he served as chair. A renowned benefactor of UK, the Sturgill Development Building is named in his honor.

Nominations for the Sturgill award should be made by faculty or graduate students by Dec. 1, 2010. Each nomination should include:

- a current curriculum vitae;

- specific evidence of major contributions to graduate study;

- comments on professional reputation;

- names of master's/doctorates directed and status of graduates, when available;

- names of students whose dissertations and theses are still in progress; and

- letters of support (from graduate students, faculty, and/or alumni)
