LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 10, 2019)  Nominations are now open for one of the University of Kentucky’s most respected recognitions, the 2020 Sarah Bennett Holmes Award, sponsored by the UK Women’s Forum.

The Sarah Bennett Holmes Award recognizes two female UK employees, one faculty member and one staff member, for their contributions to issues that affect women at UK and across the Commonwealth. These awards are designed to target efforts that might otherwise go unrecognized.

To make a nomination online, visit http://bit.ly/SBH2020. For more information, visit the UK Women’s Forum website at www.uky.edu/womensforum/sarah-bennett-holmes-award-luncheon.

Nomination forms will be accepted through Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020. Award winners will receive a prize of $1,000.

All nominees will be recognized during the annual Sarah Bennett Holmes Awards luncheon beginning 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, at the Gatton Student Center Ballroom. Information about the luncheon will be available on the UK Women’s Forum website in February.

Sarah Bennett Holmes was a distinguished former dean of women at the University of Kentucky who tirelessly championed the rights of women throughout her career. Widowed at a young age, Holmes raised four children while completing her own education. She then began a successful career at UK where she inspired young women to persevere in the face of hardship and pursue their career goals. Among her accomplishments, Holmes developed work programs for women during the Depression.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
