UK, CAER recognized as exceptional employer by U.S. Navy Reserve
LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 30, 2026) — The University of Kentucky was recently recognized by the U.S. Navy Reserve as one of a select group of civilian employers honored during the Navy Employer Recognition Event (NERE) 2026, held June 11 in San Diego, California. Hosted by Acting Chief of Navy Reserve Rear Adm. Richard S. Lofgren, the annual event recognizes organizations that demonstrate exceptional support for employees who serve as Navy Reserve sailors. The recognition highlights employers that foster an environment where Reservists can successfully balance military commitments with their civilian careers.
Yixin Luo, Ph.D., an associate research engineer at the UK Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) and Navy reservist, nominated UK for the recognition. Approximately 60 employers from across the nation were invited to participate in this year’s event.
“At CAER and across the university, I’ve experienced a culture that values both professional excellence and public service,” Luo said. “The skills I develop through military service benefit my work at UK, and the university’s support enables me to continue serving my country while contributing to research and education here in Kentucky.”
Representing UK with Luo at NERE was Matt Weisenberger, Ph.D., CAER associate director. Throughout the day, attendees gained firsthand insight into the Navy Reserve’s mission through tours, demonstrations and discussions showcasing the critical roles Reservists play in supporting national security.
“The recognition reflects the university’s commitment to supporting employees who serve our country while advancing the university's mission,” said Weisenberger. “It’s an honor to be recognized alongside organizations from across the nation that understand the value and unique contributions of our citizen-sailors.”
The annual event serves as a bridge between civilian employers and the military, strengthening partnerships that enable reservists to serve both their communities and the nation.
