Apply Now for Gaines Center Undergraduate Fellowships
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 21, 2020) — Applications are now being taken for the Gaines Undergraduate Fellowship at the University of Kentucky Gaines Center for the Humanities. The center is searching for highly motivated second-year undergraduate students for its fellowship program that gives UK students the opportunity to conduct research, take specialized seminar courses and explore academic and professional development opportunities with faculty.
The Gaines Fellowship is an intensive two-year program awarded to 12 outstanding undergraduate students each year. Selected fellows will take a four-credit hour seminar course as a cohort focused on the humanities with outstanding UK faculty both semesters of their junior year.
Their senior year, fellows will carry out an independent thesis project under the guidance of the Gaines Center director and a faculty committee. The thesis project allows fellows to conduct passionate, mentored research and to demonstrate in-depth understanding of their research upon defense. All Gaines Fellows are awarded a stipend of $2,000 their junior year and $3,000 their senior year.
Undergraduate students in all disciplines, from art history and English to biology and chemical engineering, with any intended profession, are given equal consideration. The Gaines Fellowship is best suited for students who have demonstrated outstanding intellectual curiosity and an ongoing commitment to their curricular and co-curricular goals.
Any student, from any major with an expected graduation date of May 2022 is encouraged to apply. Applications for the Gaines Fellowship can be found online at www.uky.edu/gainescenter/gaines-apply. Submissions are due 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2020.
