Help UK Beat Hundreds of Universities With RecycleMania
In 2018, you helped UK divert 7,884,456 pounds of material away from the landfill. In February and March UK is competing again against hundreds of universities in Recyclemania, a national recycling competition among college and university recycling programs.
In the past, UK has finished 25th out of 215 schools for Total Recycling but needs your help to improve their ranking.
In order to collect more recyclables in 2019, UK Recycling encourages all students, to focus on recycling right and reducing your use of single-use, disposable items.
You can recycle:
- Cardboard: packing boxes, cardboard tubes, boxes with grey or brown insides, pizza boxes (empty), cereal & cracker boxes, and any box that doesn’t have a plastic coating
- Paper: magazines, office and school paper, notepads, colored paper, calendars, newspaper (with inserts), folders, envelopes, fliers, brown paper bags, brochures, Shredded paper (bagged in a clear bag)
- Aluminum cans (empty)
- Steel food cans (empty)
- Plastic bottles and jugs only: soda bottles, juice jugs, water bottles, milk jugs, detergent and shampoo bottles
- Any glass bottle and jar, any color. (empty)
Please do not recycle:
- Cups: Plastic, paper & styrofoam
- Soft drink carrier cases, frozen food boxes
- Plastic bags (return to grocery stores instead)
- Any Styrofoam product or container
- Pyrex, ceramic or plate glass
- Food
Events across campus will highlight the importance of recycling at UK. First up on the calendar are tabling events. Stop by and learn about what you can recycle and get a free T-shirt or sunglasses made from recycled plastic bottles. Times and locations for these events are:
- Monday, Feb. 25, 6-8 p.m., Woodland Glen IV lobby;
- Wednesday, Feb. 27, 6-8 p.m., Chellgren Hall lobby; and
- Friday, March 1, 10 a.m.-noon, Mining and Minerals Resources Building.
Be on the lookout for updates on their rankings throughout the next two months on UK Recycling Facebook, Twitter (@BigBlueRecycles), and Instagram (@universityofkentucky_recycling).
