Cats Den Cancels Mini Hoops, Other Events On

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 28, 2010) – The Mini Hoops Competition scheduled to take place at the Cats Den Oct. 28 has been canceled.

But other events honoring spookiest time of the year are still on the agenda at the University of Kentucky Student Center and the Cats Den.

The Late Night Film Series is geared up to offer students a scary spectacular of creepy classic movies. At 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, in Worsham Theater the series will show “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” Followed up at 10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29, there will be a showing of “Young Frankenstein.”

“A Nightmare on Elm Street” joins the unsuspecting neighborhood on Elm Street as Freddy Krueger begins his attacks again on his innocent victims. In the movie starring Johnny Depp, Krueger attacks the children of the lynch mob that killed him by using his claws to torment them in their dreams. Now it is up to Nancy to save them, but can she make it?

In “Young Frankenstein” after the grandson of Dr. Frankenstein inherits his grandfather’s castle, he begins to change his position about his family lineage. Before, he wanted nothing to do with his grandfather's old experiments, but after discovering that they may in fact work, he soon carries out his grandfather’s old ways and creates chaos for the entire community.

The Late Night Film is held every Thursday and Friday in Worsham Theater at 10 p.m. Admission is free to students, staff and faculty, and so is the popcorn. The series is sponsored by the Student Center Director’s Office.

The Cats Den charges on as Comedy Caravan is back in full force next week, but the Cats Den is preparing its third ACUI tournament of the semester.

Beginning at 7 p.m. Nov. 1, the Cats Den will host the annual ACUI-sponsored Texas Hold’em Tournament. This is a revised tournament, so students do not have to gamble away their college tuition. Instead, players can utilize their sly moves and skillful card tricks to create a showdown. The tournament will continue on Nov. 2 and then on Nov. 4, all at 7 p.m. Plus, there will be free food and awesome prizes. The overall winner will even be eligible to compete in the regional ACUI Tournament at the University of Tennessee in February.

Another event that is quickly becoming a UK tradition is the weekly Comedy Caravan. With over 1,200 audience members already this semester, the series is keeping up the momentum by bringing Don Reese to the stage. At 8 p.m. Nov. 3, the man rumored to be the illegitimate child of Uncle Fester and G. Gordon Liddy will use his quirky and bizarre perspective to rock out the Cats Den.

The Cat’s Den is located on the first floor of the University of Kentucky’s Student Center. All of the events hosted by the Cats Den are free to students, staff and faculty. For more information, contact catsdenuk@gmail.com. These events are sponsored by the Student Center Director’s Office.
